The chilling assassination of the long-serving Liberian President and the public execution of his thirteen member Cabinet on a Monrovian beach in 1980 triggered two decades of carnage and the slaughter of tens of thousands of men women and children during the rule of the two brutal dictators who successively came to power in its aftermath. The viciousness of the two knew no bounds. The first, who survived seven coup attempts before being ousted, was captured during an uprising lead by the second who then proceeded to torture him on camera before killing him and publicly parading and desecrating his body. The second then continued the slaughter not only of his own countrymen but also those of neighbouring Sierra Leone before he was finally brought before an United Nations backed Special Court in The Hague and charged with “war crimes and crimes against humanity” and found guilty of “terrorism, murder and rape“ and being “responsible for aiding and abetting as well as planning some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history.” He was sentenced to fifty years in prison. These events and the manifold atrocities they encompass are now recorded history. What history does not record, however, are the strong rumours that began to circulate soon after the killing of the President; that his murder was indeed a coldly calculated assassination arranged by the Central Intelligence Agency, and that the coup which followed was a meticulously planned Central Intelligence Agency directed operation to overthrow his government in order to achieve the clandestine aims of the United States in their proxy war with then still Communist Russia for supremacy in the country because of its hugely strategic political importance in that part of the world at the time. Further claims that the CIA officially designated all events relevant to the coup and the consequent decades of carnage it triggered, as a matter of national security in order to prevent information about their sordid roles in the intrigues and covert foul plays that finally lead to the murder of the President from becoming public knowledge, added to the credibility of the rumours. However, none of these allegations have at any time been substantiated.Yet the rumours persist. Read more
