We are living in turbulent times and the world is becoming more complicated, but we can make it through trials and tribulations that come our way. One result of these times is increasing mental health issues that are impacting all industries throughout the world; these issues have become an epidemic. Mental health conditions can be treated effectively at a relatively low cost, yet the divide between people needing care and people with access to care remains substantial.[1] Leadership and mental health professionals must issue a call to action to all people. Why? To SAVE lives! Did you know that people are suffering in silence? Increased investment is required on all fronts for mental health, for mental health awareness to increase understanding and reduce stigma, and for efforts to increase access to quality mental health care and effective treatments.[2]When mental health conditions are not properly addressed, they can lead to attempts of suicide or suicide, especially among military service members. Our service members are placing their lives at risk to keep us safe daily, and we should do something for them to keep them safe. Let us HONOR them while they are dealing with stressors and living with mental health challenges. They are humans, not superhumans. None of us wants to have mental health challenges, but it happens to many, and we need an atmosphere where service members can positively manage challenges without being stigmatized, labeled, shamed, given a negative evaluation, or becoming fearful of losing a position or promotion. We need an atmosphere where it is psychologically safe to seek help. The Apostle Paul made messages clear to all those in Rome who were loved by God.[3] He also said, “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”[4] We must take on the same attitude in modern times, especially towards our military service members, by outdoing one another in showing them HONOR during their challenges with mental health. As leaders, we must create a culture where getting help for mental health challenges becomes a sign of courage for followers. Effective leaders want followers to be the best version of themselves while aiding them in pursuing proficient teamwork. Effective leaders must foster a culture of speaking up and then HONOR followers for seeking help with mental health challenges. There must be a balance between mental toughness and mindfulness among our service members. It takes bravery to seek mental health services, but it is worth all of it in the long run. Getting help is a sign of courage![1] World Health Organization, 2023.[2] Ibid.[3] English Standard Version, 2001, Romans 1:7.[4] ESV, 2001, Romans 12:9-10. Read more
